Craft NI is a small team and as such we’d like to ask you to read the FAQs below before contacting the office, to see if they answer your question.
What does Craft NI do?
Craft NI is the sector-lead body for the promotion and development of the design-led contemporary craft industry in Northern Ireland. Read our mission and what this means in practice here.
I would like to apply for funding from Craft NI, who do I contact?
Craft Northern Ireland is not a funding body. We have no funding to provide to individual craft businesses. We do, however, provide details of funding opportunities from other organisations on our funding page.
I am thinking of setting up a craft business, who do I contact?
As a small team we are not in a position to provide one-to-one guidance or mentoring. However, we can point you in the direction of your local enterprise centre. We also provide details of any upcoming craft/ business training / supports that we know about here. If you are thinking of taking your part-time craft practice or hobby to the next level, you may find the 'National Craft Toolkit' resource useful.
I am thinking of applying for a retail opportunity advertised by Craft NI, am I eligible?
Unless otherwise stated, Craft NI opportunities are for designer-makers living and working in Northern Ireland. Read more about who we support here.
I want to sell my work through craft fairs, where can I find information?
Craft Northern focuses on contemporary craft fairs, often with the export market in mind. A listing of international craft fairs can be found here (updated early 2013) and individual current calls to exhibit can be found here. Are you looking for local community craft fairs who are have stalls/tables available? Though not linked to Craft NI - 'Craft Fairs Northern Ireland' (facebook page) and ' Upcoming Fairs' (facebook group) are both active sites featuring community craft fair calls across NI.
Where can I take a craft workshop in my local area, what’s on?
Help us point you in the right direction by reading our signpost ‘Searching for Craft Workshops?’
How can I become a member of Craft NI?
Craft NI doesn't have a membership structure. Although it isn't possible to join Craft NI as such, we like to keep in touch. Sign up to receive our monthly e-newsletters (opportunities for makers e-news is circulated mid-month; news and events for those who love NI craft is circulated at the end of the month). If appropriate, apply to be part of the Craft NI Directory of unique craft pieces by NI designer-makers and / or our Craft Map - if you have a premises - open studios, outlet, gallery etc - where visitors can go to see, experience, buy NI craft. Details here. We are currently on Twitter,Facebook, Pinterest, Google+ and Instagram as well.
Can I share an opportunity for NI-based craft businesses with Craft NI’s members?
As we don’t have a membership structure, the best way is to submit information for inclusion in either our events of opportunities e-bulletin. Submission guidelines here. We are happy to share information of relevance to NI-based craft businesses through our social media channels as well, but ask that you provide a weblink or other online pointer to the information.
I think I should be listed on the Craft NI Directory and/or Craft Map, how do I go about it?
We warmly welcome applications to be on both Directory and Craft Map on an ongoing basis. Read about each listings and how to apply here.
I’m looking for insurance for my craft business, can you help?
We don’t offer an insurance scheme. Some examples of insurers relevant to the craft sector we’ve come across are
AIR – a network for visual and applied artists which offers insurance as part of membership.
Ian W. Wallace – craft scheme for individual craftspeople and craft groups in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
National Market Traders’ Association offer insurance to market traders as part of the membership package.
If you require insurance for an organisation/venue, be sure to check with them what levels of insurance that they require you to have.
Still need advice?
