Michelle Stephens creates installations, wall mounted works and small scale sculptural objects.
Michelle graduated with First Class Honours from her B.A. (Hons) in Fine and Applied Arts Degree, Textile Art, in June 2010. During this time she spent a year on placement in the US as part of on the Business Education Initiative (BEI) Scheme 08/09. She is currently based at R-Space Gallery in the Linen Rooms, Lisburn, as part of Craft NI’s 2011 making it programme for craft business development.
“A defining characteristic of my work has been the sustained commitment to the conceptual synthesis of contemporary and historical processes, with a particular interest in the exploration of line and structure. I reference the historical process of weave alongside new technologies. My work acts as a physical manifestation of my own personal reflections and reactions to given places as well as a dialogue with the particular materials and techniques”
Her work combines quality craftsmanship and aesthetics with a highly conceptual approach. She utilises laser-cutting alongside woven construction techniques, with potential of adapting work to a variety of architectural and public spaces.
Michelle works to both public & private commission.
