Deirdre Hawthorne
Deirdre Hawthorne trained at the Ruskin School, University of Oxford and at City Lit, London. Deirdre makes sculptural vessels in earthenware and porcelain.
“Each piece is a one-off interpretation of a specific place – a sea shore, a house, a garden or a city street – and the memories these places evoke. The forms are simple but the clay is deeply marked by rolling in plants or fabric, imprinting slip or by piercing with pins, sticks and staples. The vessels are saggar fired to create smoke and reduction effects, pushing the clay to its limits. Many are lost in the firing but the pieces that survive are idiosyncratic and unrepeatable, fragile, dark, yet inherently resilient.”
Deirdre has exhibited at Galerie Besson and Barrett Marsden in England and at SOFA New York and Chicago.
