Upcoming Mourne Creative Weekend Workshops

Mourne Creative have organised a number of upcoming creative weekend getaways. These popular workshops include pottery, cyanotype printing, willow weaving, blacksmithing, and more. Take a look at the schedule and find out more here. 

Set in a stunning location in the heart of the Mournes, Thomas Powell will return to host the Mourne Creative Pottery workshop on Saturday, 16 September, when you'll get to throw your own pots on the wheel and also learn a few other Pottery techniques that Thomas will demonstrate. 

On Sunday, 17 September, Alice Burns will teach you to create photograms by way of Cyanotype printing. A heliographic sunlight printing process which produces stunning blue print on fabrics and paper, the technique actually predates photography. Thin leaves, grasses and flowers that are dry & thin objects e.g. lace; paper cut outs are required for this workshop with Alice.

Both Workshops and an overnight stay at the cottages – including all home made meals – costs £185. An overnight stay and one workshop costs £135.

Alternatively, each workshop separately is just £60.

No experience is needed for either workshop – just a bag of enthusiasm. It's a great oppurtunity to explore the Mournes, meet new people, learn a new skill and take home something unique made with your own hands.

Don your leather apron to take part in an exciting new workshop in blacksmithing with Andrew Smyth Blacksmith on Saturday, 23 September. Andrew will guide you through the basic tool making skills required for blacksmithing and then you can use your very own tools to create an axe or blade to take home ready for the winter fuel harvest.

For something a little more relaxed, join master weaver Clive Lyttle on Sunday, 24 September who will guide you through the weaving process to further produce a platter (Skib) to take home to be admired by all

OR £90 for the blacksmithing Workshop and £70 for the willow weaving workshop.

On Saturday, 7 October, Leo Cullen who has been making Elderflower Champagne Plum Wine and Raspberry Beer for the Creative Weekends will be leading a workshop on Hedgerow wine craft. Come and learn to make your own organic wines from 100% organic ingredients. Learn from which seasons to pick the best ingredients right through to the fermanting process. Leo will be demostrating the workshop with his freshly harvested apples. Bring your own freshly foraged seasonal friut and Leo will guide you throught the rest. Leo also asks to bring you own bottles and caps.

Join Ruth Osborne Art on Sunday, 8 October for a Mourne Creative Textile Art workshop involving natural forms in mixed media printing on linen. In this workshop participants will have the opportunity to experiment with hand printing onto beautiful Irish Linen using natural materials and find out more about the folklore and superstition attached to the seasonal flora. Participants will create unique prints inspired by the natural environment of County Down and experiment with colour, pattern and mark making. These mixed media prints will then be turned into delicately printed cards or votive jars. All materials will be provided.

OR £60 each for the Wine Crafting & Textile Art Workshops

On Saturday, 14 October, learn the heritage craft of frame weaving under the expert guidance of Nicola Gates (Olla Nua). You will create your own unique contemporary wall hanging to be hung at home or to give as a meaningful handcrafted present. Using a simple wooden frame loom, you will experiment with weaving, knotting and wrapping techniques, choosing from a variety of yarns and natural fibres enabling yourself to explore texture, colour and composition.

Nicola promises to demonstrate a couple of extra techniques to non beginner weavers. Frames will be supplied but if you have your own you can bring it with you.

On Sunday, 15 October, come along and enjoy a wonderful opportunity to make to your own porcelain china bottle under the guidance of award-winning ceramicist Rebecca Killen. Learn the art of slip casting to produce your own bottle to be admired at home.

Come to Mourne Creative for a basketry weaving workshop with Louise McClean, on Saturday, 4 November. Learn how to weave and make your own basket to take home to be admired by all.

Then on Sunday, 5 November, don your leather apron and take part in a blacksmithing workshop with Andrew Smyth Blacksmith.
