Scandinavian curator and critic Jorunn Veiteberg will discuss her research and observations; in particular, the divergent trends in contemporary craft practice and changing perceptions of value and meaning.
‘Historically, craft has to a large extent sprung from resistance to the modern mentality that puts speed and change first. This impulse is now enjoying a renaissance in the ‘Slow Movement’. But not all craft can be placed in such a countercultural template. While such craft also contains a critique of many aspects of modern (or postmodern) life, its materials and methods indicate other points of departure or horizons of understanding than have traditionally dominated studio craft.’ Jorunn Veiteberg (2009), ‘Speed as stimulation, or reflections on a coffee cup’, www.thinktank04.eu.
Jorunn has worked as Head of Arts for Norwegian Television, editor-in-chief of Kunsthandverk (1998-2007) and is currently professor of curatorial studies and craft theory at Bergen National Academy of the Arts.
She is also working on a research project entitled ‘Creating Artistic Value’. Her latest books include Craft in Transition (2005) and Kim Buck: It’s the Thought That Counts (2007).
