Machi-Screen Prints

Exhibitions2nd September, 2010

Shauna McGowan is a visual artist based in County Down, launching a first solo exhibition featuring machi-screen prints on leather.

Studying Fashion and Textile design, specializing in screen-printing has enabled me to illuminate diverse surfaces with my strong, graphic drawing skills.

Illustrations have been published in Wonderland Magazine Denmark, Drawing Eire-Contemporary Irish Drawing, Au Magazine, State Magazine, Channel 4-3 minute wonder [Supersuper magazine] and Digital Textile Magazine amongst others. My recent commissions for AU magazine incorporate textiles for a mixed media finish.

Machi, the Greek word for battle, is Shauna McGowan’s first solo exhibition of screen-prints on leather, exploring the lines between mythology and family history. Following her grandfathers battle with ill health Shauna drew inspiration from the memory of them watching Jason and the Argonauts together. Jason’s daunting journey, fearless nature and the brave battles of the Argonauts reminded her of her grandfathers courageous battle for health, his tenacious spirit and the beauty of his life. Inspired by his strength Shauna portrays the multi faceted layers of life, death and grief executed through a vibrant use of colour and imagery on tactile surfaces.
