An exhibition of endearing pieces to linger over, perhaps with a smile of surprise, wry acknowledgement or humour. 13 contemporary makers have been selected who are linked by the theme of one of the simplest but most emotive words in our language – ‘Smile’.
Many of the works suggest memories of childhood and long ago holidays or handle the comedy in ordinary life. From Lindsey Mann’s brooches, described as ‘apparatus for the promotion of cheeriness’ (including one that blows bubbles), to Julie Arkell’s fabric and papier-mâché rabbit people; this exhibition looks at how craft makers have explored the quintessentially British love of everyday humour.
'Most smiles are started by another smile’, Frank Howard Clark, Playwright
