Belfast Met new HND in Art & Design

From September 2019, Belfast Met will be offering a new multi-disciplinary Higher National Diploma in Art & Design. This will be a two-year full-time course aimed at students who wish to purse or develop their careers in the creative industries.

Course Co-ordinator Mark Chambers said: “The course will emphasise the development of individual creative practice and also aims to equip students with the practical skills and knowledge to make to make a successful career within the creative arts industry”.

The course is divided into a number of compulsory units giving a broad overview of a range of disciplines, including: print-making, life drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture mixed media installation and lens based and media practice. Students will then be encouraged to specialise in a dedicated subject area.

Students must have GCSE Maths and English and either: Foundation Diploma in Art & Design; Level 3 Art & Design (Merit); or A-Level Arts & Design (B grade). Mature students will be considered individually on past experience, qualifications and portfolio.

Northern Irish ceramicist Shane Porter (Shane on Craft NI) last year took up the position of Lecturer in Ceramics at Belfast Met and will be teaching on the course. Shane studied as an undergraduate at Ulster University then graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2015 with an MA in Ceramics & Glass. He has exhibited throughout the UK and has artwork in the permanent collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He worked as a Ceramics Technician in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and taught Ceramics at the Affordable Art Fair, London and Hampstead School of Art.
