Glenda Hawkes Wins 2017 Craft In Business Award
Craft NI, in partnership with Belleek Pottery, is pleased to announce that Textiles graduate Glenda Hawkes has won the prestigious 2017 Craft in Business Award, for her striking, innovative, and commercially viable knitwear products. Congratulations Glenda!
The award was presented by Craft NI at the launch of the annual degree show. The selection panel judged submissions by written application in tandem with an assessment of work – in particular looking at the work’s commercial application, design innovation and the applicant’s consideration of their potential market.
Glenda, our 2017 Craft In Business Award winner said, "I am delighted to receive the 2017 Craft In Business Award. It is an honour to receive recognition and support for my work. I hope to use the award to start an accessories range of scarves and socks inspired by my graduate collection. Entitled ‘islander’ my knitwear collection stems from an incredible year on Inis Meain, one of the Aran Islands. As an ‘adopted’ islander I immersed herself in the laid back, carefree nature of island life and sought to express the unique essence of the islander’s personalities through this fun, vibrant and innovative collection. Luxurious yarns such as baby alpaca and silk and organic pima cotton have been hand dyed with vibrant hues. The colour palette achieved is reflects the characteristics of the island people who at first seem grey and dull but soon display their individual, dynamic personalities. With future employment secured with Inis Meain Knitting Co. I will continue working in the knitwear industry whilst developing my own brand Glenda Hawkes Knitwear."
While the judging panel added "Glenda’s design concept, strong aesthetic and technical execution was very impressive. There is enormous commercial potential in her innovative designs. We hope that this award will enable her to hit the ground running with her intention to produce an accompanying range of knitted accessories to the same creatively brilliant standard."
John Maguire, Managing Director of Belleek Pottery Group, said "Belleek Pottery is delighted to be supporting this year’s Craft in Business Award. 2017 marks the 160th Anniversary of the founding of Belleek Pottery and we feel it is very fitting that in this significant year that we will be recognizing an undergraduate final year student whose work demonstrates real potential for product innovation and for the future development of a craft business."
