Mourne Textiles pay tribute to John McAtasney

31-Jan-2018 in

We were very sad to hear of John McAtasney’s passing.

John who was 83, started weaving for Mourne Textiles over 50 years ago. This master craftsman, known as John The Weaver, is considered to have been the very last hand weaver of Linen Damask on the island of Ireland.

It was Robert Crozier, who had a hand-weaving business on the Gilford Road, who gave John his start back in 1948.

John went on to weave for the Ulster Folk Museum and soon afterwards, for Mourne Textiles.

"I wish I was younger again to do more work for Mourne Textiles, but it is wonderful to still be a part of it.

Thank God I still have a use at 83 years old."
