Sligo Library Service: Ballymote Commission
The Library would like to commission a designer-maker or artist to create an installation for the library desk which is encompasses the history and deep tradition of Ballymote. Sligo Library Service is in the process of fitting out new premises in Ballymote Town, Co. Sligo to become the new Ballymote Community Library.
Once completed this fully equipped and accessible library will be amongst the best in the country providing an extensive up-to-date Book & Audio/DVD Collection, Internet and Wifi access, Local history material and meeting rooms.
As part of the fit-out the library would like to commission a designer-maker or artist to create a piece of work which is encompasses the history and deep tradition of Ballymote.
This piece of work would be an “installation” for the library desk in Ballymote Library. The desk itself is designed to be 750mm high by 700mm deep and approx 6 metres in length. We propose that the art piece is roughly 1.75 metres long by 0.45 metres in height so that it can be easily attached to the front section of the desk. The piece would need to be designed that it could be attached to the wooden structure of the desk and not be of such a weight that would cause stress on the overall desk itself.
The piece itself be a plate of polished steel/bronze with the image/sculpture to be clearly defined within the plate. Because of the various historical/traditional associations Ballymote has such as;
> Mythology – Keshcorran (Diarmuid and Grainne, Tuatha de Dannan harpist Corran etc)
> Traditional Music – Michael Coleman, James Killoran etc
> Military – General Michael Corcoran (fighting 69th)
> Sport – Brother Walfrid (Celtic Football Club)
We would envisage that the piece incorporates as many of these themes as possible. The cost of the proposed commission is broken into three parts
> Material (size of piece, clay/plastic mould, use of forge, finished bronze etc) €5,000 ex vat
> Artists commission €1,750 ex vat
> Delivery/Mounting of piece €150 ex vat
