2008-09 was Craft NI’s third year of operation. The period to March 08 represented the organisation’s pilot phase and this year, 2008-09, witnessed Craft NI consolidating its initial development period and setting focused, strategic goals and business plans for 2008-11.

Key initiatives from the year include:
  • August Craft Month 08 and Craft NI’s first public-facing PR campaign
  • Development of Craft NI’s communications with the sector through Patronmail
  • Significant improvements in relationships with key stakeholders including Invest NI
  • and Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Creative& Cultural Skills
  • The Creative Industries Innovation Fund.
While there was much to celebrate in the ongoing success of Craft NI’s activities the year was marked with funding difficulties and as a result the Craft NI staffing complement was reduced from four to three full-time staff. Craft NI was also sorry to lose our Chairman, Professor Brian McClelland, on completion of his four-year period of office. Brian brought with him experience, knowledge and skills in craft and design that were of the highest order. In his time as Chairman he made an outstanding contribution to the organisation through his considerable leadership skills and has helped secure a better future for the craft sector in Northern Ireland.

As ever, the success of the organisation is down to the efforts of the staff and board members as well as those stakeholders, partners and supporters, in the craft sector and beyond, who contribute time and effort to building a positive and successful future for the craft sector in Northern Ireland. We are grateful to them all and look forward to maintaining these fruitful partnerships for years to come. Download a copy of the report here.
